This is a NATURAL turquoise cabochon from the Carmelita Claims which lies just north of and overlaps the Royal Blue Claim at Royston, Nevada. I personally work and operate work these claims with Richard & Helen Shull of the Esmeralda Turquoise Company & Out of Our Mines and we produce a very limited quantity of this material. You won't see this material any other place as we are the sole source. It's ideal for people who is collecting hard to find American turquoise mines. This cab measures 47mm X 35mm X 7.8mm, weighs 94.4 Carats and is backed. The turquoise for this cab was mined and then cut by me in my lapidary studio in West Central New Mexico..... Since I have handled this cab from bedrock to finished cabochon, I guarantee it's provenance. Five years after JL & UG Workman located the Royal Blue and other claims in the Crow Springs District on the Esmeralda/Nye County line of Central Nevada, a young German immigrant named Oscar Wehrand located the AZTEC claim on May 10, 1908. Over the years it has changed hands as different people and companies worked the many claims in the area. Often the quality of the turquoise produced was reported as soft and/or porous but gem grade deposits do exist on the claims. In 1999, over ninety years after Wehrand located his claim, I had a chance to locate his old Aztec and several other claims in what had become known as the Royston Turquoise District. I named the claims after my then wife Carmelita. The "Carmelita Pit", which produces quality stone in a variety of colors, was actually located on what had become Lee Hand's Royal Blue #7 claim. The four Carmelita Claims are now the oldest active mining claims located in Royston. The claims have a rich and diverse history and I'm am indeed privileged to be able to present these special and rare stones to the world. aka Wehrend.....
