Antique Pair of Minton, Hollins & Co. Hand Painted Birds and Blossoms Tiles - $299 - (Bloomington, IN)
Here is a matching pair of 8” square English traditional majolica tiles produced by the famed firm of Minton and Hollins in the late 1800s. From what we have read, these tiles were likely hand made in the Minton pottery rather than being pressed in the tile works. The high relief tiles are near perfect considering their age….and they have been beautiful mounted in classic gold frames ready for hanging. The birds are brown in color and the branches on which they are perched appear to orange trees, judging by the shape of the leaves and the design and color of the blossoms. (Further evidence may be seen in a separate listing for a similar tile showing the same type of bird by the same artist in a tree with the same leaves and blossoms and two depictions of actual orange fruit.) The background color is a difficult burgundy executed superbly. These are superb examples of the work of Minton, Hollins, & Co., a company with a somewhat convoluted past. Minton & Co. was founded in 1828, but adopted the trade name of Minton, Hollins & Co. about 1840. However, both the old and new names appear to have been used simultaneously until as late as 1912. Tiles produced after 1868 may carry either name, but use of the name Minton & Co. faded greatly after 1850. Dimensions: each frame 12” square x 1 3/8” deep Weight: pair 5 lbs 12 oz.
