It only holds a certain type of spool. These older ones in silk and cotton have larger holes in them then the more modern wooden spools from the 60's. The open grooves along the side, I've read, are suppose to be thread cutters. I don't find it all that easy with the one I sampled but it's great to leave an end hanging out to pull on. Might even keep them from tangling? Research says they are from the mid 1950's some of the silk threads I suspect are from the 20's Their labels are embossed on them in different colored inks.
