Antique Rare Meeks Period American Neo-Classical Empire Gothic Mahogany Bed c. 1840 Up for sale is this period Gothic mahogany bed. It is circa 1840. It is extremely rare. I have not seen one like it. It is a one of a kind. It is probably made as a special order. It is numbered 369 on several locations on the bed. It appears to be made in New York and is possibly attributable to Joseph Meeks and Sons. It is made from mahogany and mahogany flame veneers. The underlayment is pine. The bed is characterized by huge 9" thick octagonal bedposts, Gothic arches and trefoil design. The veneers on the entire bed are of the highest quality. The trefoil design is at the top of the bedposts and is again repeated in a much larger scale on the crests of the head and foot board. It has been professionally conserved by a reputable antique conservator. Overall, the bed is in excellent condition. It does have normal wear for an antique and there are old repairs to the large veneer panels in the head and foot board. There were expansion cracks due to its age and construction and mahogany splines were put in place as a remedy many years ago. There was one missing bed bolt, but a machinist turned a new bolt and it works perfectly. The bed fits a full size mattress. The dimensions are: 75" tall by 70" wide by 90" long. The thickness of the columns are 9". The rails are 18" tall at the widest part and is 11" tall at the narrowest part. The rails are over 6 feet in length. The crests dimensions are: 14" tall from the top of the crest to the bottom of the last ball finial by 13" wide. The bed has hidden casters under each of the four posts and it rolls easily. If you do your research, you will find that this is an extremely rare bed and you will not find another one offered for sale, possibly for many many years.
