VINTAGE MIDDLE EAST ARABIC ABA OR BISHT MAN'S TUNIC CAFTAN ROBE TEXTILE - $249 - (Abbeville, LA)
Vintage wool aba or bisht caftan like robe that is worn as the last robe over others, usually by important people in a community. Sometimes, used to be worn by Iraqi rabbis. See last photo showing one in a museum as it is worn, which is similar to, but not the one in the listing. Probably from Syria or Iraq. From the first half of the 20th century. These are harder to find from this period. Made of wool in a plain weave consisting of two horizontal panels sewn together and folded over to form the robe by sewing top shoulder seam and creating arm openings at top corners. Neck is elaborately embroidered in gold-colored metal thread and simply, at the top seam, and around the arm hole openings. These are sometimes made from camel wool, but the one listed is somewhat picky, so I am not sure, from which kind of wool it has been woven. The weave is quite light, so it was probably a summer aba as opposed to a winter aba, which would be a heavier weave. In fair to good condition with scattered smaller holes throughout and one larger hole. Some stains, especially along bottom edge of one side. See photographs, which were taken outdoors on a sunny day without a flash. If you would like more photographs, please message me. Please see the other textiles that I have listed. Size: 59” wide x 54” long USPS Parcel Post or Priority Mail shipping/handling to U.S. addresses only. Includes tracking number. Insurance required. ***International bidders: Before bidding, ask about shipping to any location other than the United States as I may have to update my exclusion list.*** No returns, please ask questions for additional information.
