Kiaha Pima Indian BURDEN BASKET Native American Basketry (Arizona, 1800’s) - $3,995 - (Tucson, AZ)

This old, burden basket (Kiaha) was created by the Pima/Papago Indians out of desert materials that include saguaro ribs, willow, and agave fiber. These baskets were captured in art/diaries by the first European explorers and are a testament to the resourcefulness of Arizona’s early civilizations. This basket is COMPLETE (original headband, backrest, and saguaro rib support poles included) which is extremely rare and coveted by collectors. Diameter (across the basket): 25 1/2 inches, Top to Bottom of the main basket (little over 22 inches), each Saguaro Rib supports are around 28 inches, and the back rest is 16 inches tall by 8 inches wide. The Kiaha construction could support hundreds of pounds and were often used by native women prior to arrival of horses in North America. This basket is the “holy grail” of the Southwest and a hallmark to any museum or personal collection. The basket comes with professional mounts seen in pictures (provided by a curator at the Arizona State Museum) which will make it easy to display on wall.
