6" Etley spear point and rare book with illustration of this exact point - $450 - (Wesley Chapel, FL)

Here in a unique package are a beautifully crafted Etley spear point in a glass-front display case, and a copy of the rare, out-of-print archaeological book in which this exact same point was illustrated. This unusual combination offers you impeccable provenance for the artifact, as well as unprecedented documentation and a fine addition to your archaeological library. The artifact is 6” long and knapped from off-white chert (a flint-like stone). It is beautifully knapped, thin, with controlled flaking and no hinge fractures. The only defect I could find is a tiny chip on the edge, visible on the upper right in the first photo. Judging by the patina, this had occurred before the artifact was buried in sediment. I would guess this point would be classified as a Grade 8 or 9. The obverse of the base of the point is marked in India ink with the site number and an artifact accession number. The archeological site is 23MN242, which is the Booth Site in Monroe County, Missouri. This Late Archaic (about 2,500 to 4,000 years old) campsite was described by Walter E. Klippel in the Missouri Archaeological Society Research Series #6, in 1969. The Booth Site is located between Monroe City and Moberly, Missouri, and was identified as a classic Etley site. This is an unprecedented opportunity to own not only a fine Etley point, but one with provenance from a known archaeological site. Along with the artifact in its display case, you will receive a copy of The Archaeology of Missouri, Volume I, by Carl H. Chapman, with illustrations by Eleanor F. Chapman (University of Missouri Press, 1975). The Etley point is illustrated on page 214; it was chosen as an excellent representative of this point type. The precision of Eleanor’s pen-and-ink drawing will allow you to compare individual flake scars to verify that the illustration is indeed of this particular artifact. The book is a rare volume, now out of print. It was written as a reference for professional archaeologists, but w…
