Antique American Wooden Doll with Unusual Hair, Documented in Heart of the Tree - $4,250 - (Diamondville, WY)

This is a one of a kind antique wooden doll from my personal collection. She is photographed and described in the Rosalie Whyel 2003 book "The Heart of the Tree: Early Wooden Dolls to the 1850s" and I have photographed her beside it. The book is included for description only and is not part of this sale. She is described here as "The features have faded to almost indiscernible on the well-loved wooden doll, yet from what remains the maker's muse is evident, as it was almost certainly inspired by the paper mache and china heads dolls prevalent at this time. Probably made in the United State at a time when most manufactured dolls were still imported from Germany, France and England, the doll's shoulder head is attached to a cloth body with leather arms. Note the unique spiral carving of the head. The twenty inch doll wears two layers of slips underneath a modest but charming attire of white apron over a blue and white cotton gingham dress. Wooden feet are painted with orange boots with black painted buttons." This doll has quite a presence. I have collected antique dolls for a very long time and have never seen another with hair carved like this one. I did have a seamstress make her a dress, which she now wears, but will include the original one as photographed in the book. She wears antique pantalets, a woolen slip with embroidered lace trim, and a cotton slip with tucks and eyelet trim. The wooden stand the original dress is photographed on is for display only and not part of the sale.
