He was 85.Mr. Van Wart was born in Pasadena and moved to San Francisco while still in high school, and he remained in the Bay Area until his death. He attended UC Berkeley but dropped out for lack of money, transferring instead to a radio engineering school in San Francisco.In 1943, he began working for KNBC (later KNBR) in San Francisco as an engineer, which allowed him to follow his interests in news and history. He retired 42 years later as a senior engineer.During the 1950s, while still working at KNBC, Mr. Van Wart began Aero Photographers, which shot large aerial photographs of the Bay Area. He later photographed the construction of some of San Francisco's iconic buildings, including the Transamerica Pyramid and the Bank of America building.Though he loved radio and photography, relatives said Mr. Van Wart found his deepest enjoyment from sailing. As a member of the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, he crewed on several boats, including the Volante, owned by friend Dr. Charles O'Brien. The boat won races up and down the coast and in MexicoMr. Van Wart was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, and his daughter Christine. He is survived by his daughter Marcie Van Wart of Redondo Beach and grandchildren Nancy Romatzick of New York and Michael Romatzick of Connecticut.A burial at sea service will be held Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. at the St. Francis Yacht Club followed by a reception at 1 p.m. at the club.
