Rare Antique Pair Bookends: MONKEYS READING IVORINE BOOK J.B. Hirsch.. 1932 VG - $195 - (Clarksville, VA)

For your consideration is a rare set of antique J. B. Hirsch Company bookends. Each bookend features a monkey reading a book made of ivorine (early celluloid) while sitting on top and beside other books. The bookends were produced circa 1932. (These bookends may have been in response to the then contemporary controversial "Theory of Evolution" that had been the subject of the 1925 Scopes trial.) This rare set of bookends are typical of the high quality which makes the products produced by the J. B. Hirsch Company so sought after by collectors. Each bookend stands 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/4" wide, 3 " deep and weighs 2 lbs. 2 oz. (4 lbs. 4 oz. for the pair). The bookends are in very good condition. They have no cracks, dents, missing finish. Their authenticity is assured as the hallmark of “JB Hirsch” and the production date of “1932” is reflected on one of the stacked books beside each monkey.
