1803 Draped Bust 1/2 Half Cent, Rotated Dies (C-4), ANACS VF30 Details-Graffiti - $285 - (York, NY)

1803 Draped Bust Half Cent with Rotated Die Error This beautiful example of an obsolete denomination of US coinage would be a fantastic addition to your half cent collection, error collection or type set. GRADE: Half cents were the lowest denomination of money in circulation in their time. Because of this, they are usually heavily worn. This coin still retains a high level of detail and is professionally graded VF 30* (Also see next line). CONDITION: The initials "PW" are faintly scratched into the field to the right of Liberty's head. The "P" is in front of the neck and "W" begins in front of the chin and finishes in front of the nose. *It is due to this "Graffiti" that the grade is noted with the word "Details". RARITY: A total mintage of 92,000 half cents means of the $534,424.41 in coinage struck in 1803, 1/2 cents account for only $460.00 of that figure. In stark contrast, there were over 3.1 million large cents alone in the same year. When you consider the total dollar value of each issue, half cents are among the rarest of all US coins. ERROR: This particular coin was struck with severely rotated dies. They are fully 180 degrees out of position in relationship to each other. When viewing the obverse ("Heads") of any US coin, the reverse ("Tails") should be up-side-down in relation. Normally, when you flip a US coin over the top, the reverse will be facing you upright. With this coin, you have to flip it side-to-side for the reverse to be upright. DIE VARIETY: This die variety is known as Cohen 4 or C-4. Determined by studying the unique features of the reverse produced by the engraving of a particular die. COLOR: BN, The color is a luscious chocolate brown. If color and die varieties are important to you, please judge for yourself with the images provided. I have done my best to describe this coin here, but PLEASE feel free to ask any questions. Free Shipping! Will ship to US addresses only.
