Large Ancient Greek Gold Lion Head Earring - $1,190 - (Auburn, CA)
5th - 3rd Century BC 27 mm Diameter 4.4 grams This is a beautiful, larger version of the classic ancient Greek Lion Head earring. It was made with coiled high carat yellow gold wire that tapers to a point from a detailed finial shaped as the head of a lion. A collar of sorts sets the base for the head and it is covered in fine filigree decoration. Great workmanship. Excellent condition. Completely intact. Nice solid feel to it. You see these from time to time but most are pretty ragged looking with loss to the head and coils. I have a second one which I bought a decade ago that is half the size as this one. One of the pics shows the result of an auction in early 2017. That earring sold at the high end of the estimate ~ $2000 plus $460 buyers premium.
