Item For Sale: A very nice Mackay Radio Model 168-B 500 kHZ transmitter made in November 1942. This is a WW2 relic now but it appears unused and from storage. It was maintained until the Department of Commerce made VLF transmissions at 500 kHZ obsolete and no longer to be used by the merchant marine or the US Navy. Distress calls now are made via cellular phones & satellite links. According to the front of the operating panel, it runs 5 watts on 500 kHZ when tuned to maximum glow on the tuning light. It uses DC batteries (not included) and can be operated to send automatic signals or hand signals via the front panel telegraph key. Please study the unit. If you have any questions, we will entertain them but we really have no other information on this unit that we can share. It would best be placed in a museum but would be equally at home with the radio amateur licensed to experiment on that frequency band. Items released this late in service probably came from one of the WW2 US battleships when moth balled. Manuals: I have no official Mackay manual for this and have never seen one. However, the unit is designed to be operated successfully by non-radio personnel and is labeled somewhat "self explanatory". I have never been inside the unit but I suspect it was made so that any competant radio technician could repair & adjust as needed. Just a guess but if the inside is labled as carefully as the outside, battery numbers et al are described on the rear of the front panel. Again, guessing here. Condition: Appears unused.
