THOMAS HART BENTON - Ranch Gate - Western Landscape Drawing on Paper circa 1946 - $35,000 - (Mission, KS)

"RANCH GATE" by Thomas Hart Benton An 8 x 12 (96 sq. inch) Ink and Gouache Drawing on Paper depicts an entrance gate to a New Mexico or Wyoming ranch (seen in the distance). It has the appearance of many post World War II scenes when Benton turned his attention more fully to landscapes in those two states. This drawing either anticipates or is an early example of Benton's (1950-1975) Late Period, when human activity is noted but seems almost incidental and subordinate to the vastness of those western landscapes, the depth of which is well-captured in Ranch Gate, causing the viewer to feel as if they are there. The desert plants and sparseness of the vegetation argues for a northeast New Mexico location just west of the Texas Panhandle..(Wyoming landscapes are a bit less arid and a bit more verdant which designates it more often as what is known as "The High Plains."). The drawing is included in the book, "Benton Drawings: A Collection of Drawings by Thomas Hart Benton" University of Missouri Press, Columbia, 1968 on page 7. "Ranch Gate" was purchased directly from the artist in the early '70s and comes with a Bill of Sale signed by the artist. The drawing is also accompanied by an Authentication Letter from recognized Benton authority, Henry Adams. Feel free to e-mail with any questions.
