USGS APOLLO PHOTOMETRIC TECHNIQUE for PLANETARY SLOPES Vintage 1973 Report - $10 - (Elko, NV)
This is USGS Professional Paper 812-A, “A Photometric Technique for Determining Planetary Slopes from Orbital Photographs.” Published in 1973, this is one of only a few rare publications the USGS did on behalf of NASA on Lunar geology. This is part of the “Contributions to Astrogeology” series of professional papers. This 16-page book discusses the method of using differential lighting recorded in images of the moon to derive topographic information where stereo pairs are not available. It provides a mathematical approach that is generalized for use on both vertical and oblique views. It is also broadly applicable to other celestial bodies than just the moon, and was in part driven by the desire to apply such techniques to Mars. It is a somewhat technical report but provides yet another rare glimpse of the tremendous scientific and technical challenge the Apollo missions represented. This study was essential to interpreting craters on the moon and as such it has a special place within the literature relating to the Apollo program. It is a credit to the many great scientists that worked on the project, and forms a unique part of the history of the program. This volume is in excellent condition and appears to have been used very little, if at all. This is a rare opportunity for collectors of Apollo program literature and memorabilia Expert packing assured.Visit my store, Rockwiler Books and Minerals.
