Charmaine Tracey 1989 "Brolga Dance" Australian Aboriginal Style Pen & Ink Drawing - Frame 18" x 23" Found at an estate sale, this intricate and entrancing 1989 pen and ink drawing by Australian artist Charmaine Tracey is entitled "Brolga Dance". It's from her series called "Whitefella Dreaming" and was purchased at the gallery of Southern Cross Pottery in Boambee, New South Wales. It's signed "CHAR" in the lower right hand corner. Charmaine Tracey was living in nearby Coff's Harbour at the time. 1989 is the date on the biographical information from the Recreational Arts Team in Pyrmont, Australia, accompanying the drawing. It may have been created before that. A gallery exhibition invitation is also included. It's unclear from the biographical information and the invitation whether the artist is herself aboriginal or has simply been inspired by Australian aboriginal art. This 11.5" x 16" pen and ink drawing is attractively framed under glass in a 17.5" x 22.75" x 1" wood frame with a gilt inner border. The framed painting weighs 4 lb. 10 oz., making it easy to hang. The frame is in very good condition. The brolga, sometimes called the Australian crane, is well-known for its intricate mating dance, one which has inspired a traditional aboriginal dance. A common and gregarious wetland species of tropical and south-eastern Australia and New Guinea, the brolga is a tall, upright bird with a long beak, slender neck, and long legs. Its small head has an orange-red band of color contrasting with otherwise grey plumage and black wing tips. Australian aboriginal and aboriginal-style modern art first became recognized and popular the late 1980’s so this work is an early one in this genre.
