HERBERT HOOVER. Historically important partly-printed document entitled a, “Consent for Use of Name as First Choice for the Presidency,” and signed in fountain pen by, “Herbert Hoover,” as the potential Republican candidate. This form was Hoover’s official declaration as a candidate for President of the United States at the Republican National Convention and it reads in full: “I, Herbert Hoover, residing at Stanford University Campus, City of Palo Alto, County of Santa Clara, State of California, hereby authorize and give my consent to Frank B. Grove of Cadiz in the County of Harrison, State of Ohio, to use my name in a Declaration of Candidacy as Alternate to the Republican National Convention as his First Choice for the nomination for the Presidency of the United States by said National Convention to be held in the City of Kansas City on the 12th day of June, 1928.”. VIRTUALLY NONEXISTENT AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT “CONSENT FOR USE OF NAME AS FIRST CHOICE FOR THE PRESIDENCY” FORM SIGNED BY HERBERT HOOVER The document is countersigned by Lawrence Richey (served as a special assistant and secretary to Hoover during his public life) and George Akerson (became the first official White House Press Secretary under Hoover’s administration) as witnesses, one page, measures 8.5” by 7”, signed in Kansas City, MO on June 12, 1928, and in fine condition with light toning and soiling. “Consent for Use of Name as First Choice for the Presidency” forms signed by U.S. presidents are virtually nonexistent and we were only able to locate one other available for sale at auction in the past 25 years (it recently sold for $4,000 at Heritage Auctions in October 2016).
