Rare 1863 Port Royal SOUTH CAROLINA Civil War UNION OCCUPATION newspaper with long detailed back page coverage of the CONFEDERATE INVASION of the NORTH (Maryland and Pennsylvania) resulting in the BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG several days later - inv # 6E-108 SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL and very rare Civil War NEWSPAPER, the New South (Port Royal, SOUTH CAROLINA) dated March 15, 1862. This is the Volume I # issue !! In addition to being the inaugural issue of this Union Occupation newspaper, this has a salutation giving the reason for the issuing of this Union Occupation newspaper in the former Confederate port city of Port Royal, SC. There is also a VERY EARLY news report of the FIRST BATTLE of IRON CLAD WARSHIPS, the USS Monitor vs the CSS Virginia (formerly the Merrimac). The New South was a rare UNION OCCUPATION newspaper issued by Union forces occupying Port Royal, SC during the Civil War. Union postmaster Joseph H. Sears published the New South newspaper out of the post office building on Union Square in Port Royal, S.C., on a weekly basis beginning in March 1862. The paper was moved to the town of Beaufort sometime in 1865 and remained there until it ceased in 1867. The New South offers a glimpse into an era of unprecedented social upheaval in the South Carolina Lowcountry. In the Battle of Port Royal Sound of Nov. 7, 1861, Union Navy forces seized control of Port Royal Harbor, and Beaufort District’s white residents fled in their wake.
