1960s Mayfair (Kawai) Electric Bass Guitar. Beatle Violin-Style Bass. - $275 - (Yellow Springs, OH)
Travel back in time with this vintage electric. Made in Japan in the late 1960s by, I believe, Kawai. Looking at Frank Meyers classic "History of Japanese Electric Guitars," the Mayfair brand and the pickups seem to both be Kawai. After Paul McCartney made the Hofner violin bass famous, Japanese manufacturers created a slew of copy Beatle basses. This one is hollow bodied, but does not have the f-holes. So, it shouldn't feedback as much as an f-hole Beatle bass. Cosmetically, structurally, and functionally, it's in very good condition. With minimal ordinary play wear, it looks great. Structurally, it's in good solid condition. Functionally, it plays well. I cleaned both of the control pots and the two pickup switches from the inside of the cavity with DeOxit, so they should be close to static-free. Frets and fretboard are in great shape. No case. Neck is reasonably straight. Truss rod works. 12th fret action is dialed to 8/64" on the bass side and 7/64" on the treble side. It's a foxy old bass that has plenty of music left in it. If you do make an offer during business hours, please know that I typically respond to offers within the hour. Questions? It will be well packed with plenty of new 1/2" bubble wrap and shipped in a new 46"x19"x7" stout cardboard instrument box.
