c 1900 42 page family HUMOR animated scrapbook photo album early DADA surrealism - $150 - (Syracuse, NY)
A remarkable apx 8 x 11 fully handmade scrapbook right down to the layered pages than appear to be made from old general store signs or wrapping paper (see the red lettering on the edges). Including front and rear cover (shown side by side in the first photo) 42 pages. I think this started life as a family photo album but some crazy creative idea took over and most of thephotos were pulled and the heads cut out so they could be placed on clippings from advertisements in newspapers and journals. Each image is its own one frame comic with a line of text clipped from perhaps a book and pasted in. I have seen dozens of Victorian & Edwardian scrapbooks and never one quite so clever, closer to the hijinx of the roaring 20s but with the distinct look of pre-world war 1 society. Looks like early hand-made animation, and probably the earliest book employing the DADAist / Surrealist aesthetic that we have seen.
