Extremely Rare Emile Galle Olive Branch Vase c. 1905 - $1,500 - (Kihei, HI)

An extraordinary one of a kind masterpiece by Emile Galle! A very rare representation of olive branches! The olive branches are applied as an overlay on frosted olive green translucent glass with a hint of orange. The olives and branches have been polished to contrast with the frosted glass. Galle has brilliantly created a water drop dripping off the edge of one of the leaves that only a master could do. The bottom of the vase conveys a ground pontil. When the bottom is viewed from the neck looking inward, the ground pontil shows concentric rings of different colors as can be viewed in the pictures above. **********************************************************************************************************Émile Gallé, (born May 8, 1846, Nancy, France—died Sept. 23, 1904, Nancy), celebrated French designer and pioneer in technical innovations in glass. He was a leading initiator of the Art Nouveau style and of the modern renaissance of French art glass. Gallé’s strikingly original work made a great impression when it was exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Over the next decade his glass, reflecting the prevailing interest in Japanese art, became internationally known and imitated. It contributed largely to the free, asymmetric naturalism and symbolic overtones of Art Nouveau. He employed wheel cutting, acid etching, casing (i.e., layers of various glass), and special effects such as metallic foils and air bubbles, calling his experiments marqueterie de verre (“marquetry of glass”). His study of botany was the source for his natural designs, which represented leaves, ethereal flowers, vines, and fruits.
