Grenfell Hooked Mat Rug Hunter with Dog Sled Folk Art Pre 1930 This is a beautiful large hooked mat depicting a hunter observing a dog team in the distance. In wonderful condition with no repairs or holes - some fading evident as seen the reverse photo. Dyed silk on burlap with a black border. It measures 27 1/2 " x 20 ".It has been stored for many years and is from a smoke free home. Label as shown - Grenfell Industries - Handmade in Newfoundland and Labrador. Sir Wilfred Grenfell established medical missionary hospitals in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador in the early 1900's where people lived in remote fishing communities only accessible by boat. He also established a cottage industry, known as the Industrial to help supplement peoples income which produced a number of distinctive handicrafts including the well known hooked mats which are so collectible today.
