Dali created 101 watercolor paintings to interpret the Divine Comedy, which were then reproduced using the woodblock/engraving method. With this technique, engravers carve each painting's image into a set of woodblocks, with each layer of a painting's color requiring a separate carved woodblock. The individual blocks are then printed layer by layer to recreate the image. The Devine Comedy collection of 101 paintings required over 3,500 individually carved blocks, with means each print required approximately 35 different woodblocks to create. Check out YouTube for more on this method of printing! The set of 101 original woodblock prints were then published in a bound book by Les Heures Claires, Paris, France in an edition size of 4,765. This print came from one of these books. The sheet measures approximately 13" x 10 1/3" with an image size of approximately 7 1/4" x 9 1/2" on BFK Rives paper.
