ANTIQUE CABINET PLATE PORCELAIN ARMORIAL WARE HERALDIC CHINA DANIELL CO LONDON - $599 - (Aiken, SC)
An antique English porcelain armorial plate marked for Daniell & Co. The plate is painted in enamels and gilded bearing a monogram, crest and banner. The turquoise edge features two rows of gilt dots and an intricate white and gold border. A family crest or coat of arms is painted just above the monogram along with the banner that reads “Dominus Illuminatio Mea” or the Lord is my light. The University of Oxford is one of several collages that use the Latin phrase in their coat of arms. The plate was retailed by Daniell & Co., a London retailer in the late 1800’s. Reference to the store as a retailer known for for china and glass can be found in the “ Victorian London – Directories – Dickens's Dictionary of London”, by Charles Dickens, Jr., 1879 . The book was a guidebook for everything that was necessary for life in Victorian England including among others; where to shop and advice on hiring servants. I am still researching this plate and the armorial. It appears to be an armored gloved hand or a gauntlet (or possibly an arm in armour embowed) above a crown resting on a braided base (a knight’s tortillion?). From my research I have read that a Knight's tortillon with raised arm implied someone who served in a high position or an armored gloved hand (gauntlet) meant “ready for battle”. Retailed by Daniell & Co, 129 New Bond St, London. Impressed with an “S” Measurements; 10 ¼” in diameter Condition Report; Very good, minor wear to some of the enamels.
