AUTOGRAPH LETTER TO BOOK BINDER GEORGE SUTCLIFFE SIGNED BY ENGLISH MUSICIAN AND COMPOSER EDWARD GERMAN. London: June 27th, 1918. Letter penned in black ink & filling the first 2 sides of a sheet of his light gray personalized letterhead folded to form 4 sides, each 7 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide, with his address printed at the top of the first side. Signed "Edward German". The bottom corners of the letter are lightly creased. Folded once for mailing. Very good. German writes to the eminent book binder George Sutcliffe thanking him for the opportunity to see some of his work: "I don't know when I have been so impressed. The bindings of "The Seasons" and "Hiawatha" were revelations to me; but perhaps what made me wonder more than all was the way in which letters of more than two hundred years ago had been renovated!" Early in his career Sir Edward German [1862-1936] studied and played the violin and taught music. In 1888 he was appointed conductor and music director of the Globe Theatre, London, and began composing incidental music for the productions. The success of these compositions led to other commissions and thereafter he continued composing for the theatre and concert hall and for music festivals. After the death of Arthur Sullivan in 1900 German completed Sullivan's unfinished comic opera "Emerald Isle" and subsequently composed several comic operas of his own.
