Spanish Cup Hilt Rapier C1650 - Reduced - $3,200 - (Franklin, TN)
Iron hilt with long flamboyant slightly angled cross guard with fluted quillons with broad flat terminals and matching knuckle bow. Compressed spherical pommel with baluster foot. Line bordered hemispherical with rudimentary cross guard lobes, the left side pierced with small square, probably for hanging. Crowned R mark to front. Fine Spanish form grip, wire wrapped and vertically flutes with crenellated iron bars inset and secured by iron ferrules. Grip appears to be wrapped brass wire with raised iron studs. 35” flattened diamond blade section with deep fuller both sides inscribed XXIOHANNIS COLL XX and stopped with maker’s mark of Johannes Coll as recorded in Gyngell p.38. Blade etched both sides in scrolling foliage for first 3rd. Fine example of a Spanish rapier with an imported German blade as was the fashion. Hilt shows strikes whether from practice or a duel unknown. Additional for sale I have 2 small swords and another cuphilt.
