KAWAI Q-80ex digital midi sequencer with power adapter and manual - $200 - (Soldiers Grove, WI)
This little beauty is one of my secret weapons. I use it as a MIDI alternative to Ableton Live. With this baby and any multi-timbral midi keyboard I can be up and running in a fraction of the time it takes to boot up a computer. Some years ago I was able to clobber out a song before the computer was ready to go, and with the faster boot times on current computers I think I could still do it! The secret to this process is the Motif function on the Q80-ex. Motifs contain all the midi information to make a part of your song - verse, bridge, break, chorus, etc. They can be as long or short as you need them to be and, here is the similarity to Ableton Live, can be played back in any order you choose. You can, as I termed it above, 'clobber' a song together in short order using a pen and a pad to keep track of the Motifs. There is no function to name the Motifs and that is my single gripe, but using the good ol' analog method of taking notes works just as well. I've long maintained that it's faster than doing some menu diving and entering a name for the Motif using an unfamiliar grid of letters and symbols. Once you've got the named song (and it IS possible to name a song) in good shape, save it to an SMF or Standard Midi File. These can be imported directly into Ableton Live or any other digital audio workstation - examples include Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, Logic - or any other software sequencer of your choice. Then you can pick bigger and better sounds for your finished song! This sale includes the power adaptor and a worse-for-wear manual.
