This is a very old brooch. My Great ,Great Aunt wore it in the 1800's. The lower half swings from a hinge. There are no markings on it. The black enamel embossed flora vines and ornate design is very pretty. Rose Gold. The trombone clasp with barrel works fine. Everything on this brooch is original and dates from 1860's and 1880's. It is a burnished gold or bloomed gold on brass base metal. It is a Taille d'Epargne' design.A little history... Referred also as black enamel tracery from the French translation "saving cut." This method was mass produced by the Birmingham firms through the mid 1850's and was imitated by the United States @ 1860.
