This very rare, historic oblong-shaped softcover catalogue with stiff wraps was published on the occasion of this fascinating traveling exhibition from 1989-90 focusing on Andy Warhol's early career. The title of the show "Success is a Job in New York" is borrowed from one of Warhol's most famous quotes. Indeed, this show covers all of Andy's jobs in New York that led to his success, from designing magazines, record albums, perfume advertisements, broadsheets fabrics and windows for Bonwit Teller, Lord & Taylor, etc. as well as celebrity portraits. There is even a "pre-New York" section featuring works from the Warhola family collection.The catalogue was edited by Donna M. DeSalvo forward was written by Thomas W. Sokolowski and Phillip M. Johnston. Donna Salvo (now a Whitney head curator) wrote the essay entitled "Learning the Ropes: Observations on the Early Work of Andy Warhol", and Ellen Lupton and J. Abbott Miller wrote "Line Art: Andy Warhol and the Commercial Art World in the 1950's." Other writings in this catalogue include an essay entitled "Tomorrow's Man" by Trevor Fairbrother.This oblong-shaped volume measures 12 by 9 inches, and is filled with black and white and color illustrations. It has 89 pages (paginated) and at the end is a Checklist of all 194 works in this substantial exhibition.There is significant wear to the cover of this catalogue both front and back, including extensive creasing and bending, but the inside pages are clean and crisp and otherwise in very good condition.
