Vintage Engraver's Engraving Ball Block Vise A D Muehlmatt Cin. U.S.A. - $155 - (Camden, TN)
This appears to be the smaller of A D Muehlmatt's line of engraving blocks. It stands 5 1/4 inches tall, 3 7/8 inches at widest area, 2 inches at the narrowest. The top also measures 2 inches across and both drilled plates on top swivel where as on some of the larger blocks only one side swivels. The gap on top fully open is 9/16 inch and 3/8 inch deep. Measurements are approximate. Someone long ago ground a small area out of one side, likely for holding a specific item for engraving. This size block would also be ideal for holding rings while bezel setting stones, bead setting etc. It is light weight at approximately 7 pounds so the base will rotate quickly in an appropriate ring. Currently a roll of masking tape is serving that purpose. At the same time, the almost 7 pounds is enough weight to absorb the force needed to do bezel setting etc. The included leather ring needs more sand inside and sewing which might be able to be done by a shoe repairman. No guarantees on the condition of the leather ring, it is included in case you want to try that. The one key I believe is original to the block and the wood one I made with a clock key, which is also included. There are no pins or clamps included for holding objects while engraving. I have made some in the past with welding rod of the correct size to fill the holes. That is an easy job if you have some jewelry tools. Free shipping on this item via USPS Priority Medium Box. Please ask any questions before bidding as I am not offering returns on this sale.
