1959 Fender tweed Tremolux amp - $3,850 - (Camden, SC)
This is a beautifully-restored April ’59 Fender Tremolux amp model 5G9-A in the “large” (same as the tweed Pro) cabinet. When I first got this amp, the original cabinet was covered in black vinyl and has been re-tweeded by Michael Clark who also restored the electronics.The model no. on the tube chart does not reflect the 5G9-A circuit, and for some reason new tube charts were never printed after Fender upgraded the circuit in 1958. This amp has a long-tailed phase inverter like the 5F6-A tweed Bassman and other upgrades that make the 5G9-A Tremolux one of the best-sounding and most popular Fender tweed amps ever produced with a single speaker.The transformers are original, the tubes are new, and the filter caps are new Sprague Atoms. The 2 large brown caps on the board are new caps in the original Astron paper sleeves. All the original yellow Astron caps were so far out-of-spec that the tubes couldn’t be biased, and they were replaced with NOS blue Mallorys with the same values from the ‘60’s. It also has a new grounded power cord, and a new leather handle. The original "Fender Tremolux" logo badge was saved and reinstalled on the new tweed.The original parts that were removed (except tubes) are pictured and will be included.The speaker is a 1958 Jensen P12P with the original cone. The P12P has a slightly larger alnico magnet and slightly higher power rating than the P12Q’s originally installed by Fender. I have found this speaker to be a perfect choice for this circuit as it sounds the same as a P12Q and handles the power better. All the tweed Tremolux amps I have seen to date have new replacement and/or re-coned 12” speakers, indicating these amps routinely blew the original P12Q’s.The Tremolux was Fender’s first amp with vibrato (and the only tweed model), and this one includes the original footswitch in the wooden base.The crowning touch is a handsome new vinyl cover made by Coveramp.com in Canada.This amp is being sold as-is with no warr…
