Chinese Boxwood Sages Qing Dynasty 19th Century - $224 - (Tallahassee, FL)
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Offered are is exceptionally fine pair of elegant, highly collectible carved boxwood Chinese sages of the 19th century late Qing dynasty. The figures were acquired in China in the early 1900s by members of my family, who lived there from 1910 to 1948. These sages may well be representations of two of “The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” (also known as the Seven Worthies of the Bamboo Grove) who historically were a group of scholars, writers, and musicians of the 3rd century CE, or around the time of Confucius. The headgear, hairstyles, and robes of these figures are of the Confucian era. Both have the characteristic slender beard of the sage. One sage carries a rolled scroll in his left hand, and at his feet, around the pedestal on which he stands, are chrysanthemums. The other sage holds a large fan behind his back, and is accompanied by a large goose. In ancient China the goose was considered a messenger between Heaven and Earth. The carving of both figures is expertly executed with fine details. Their wise, inlaid eyes are intact; even the goose has inlaid eyes. The reddish boxwood has developed a lustrous patina over the past one hundred plus years. CONDITION: The figurines are in perfect condition. There is no damage or flaw evident anywhere. The figures measure 6 inches high by about 2 ½ inches across at the base. FREE SHIPPING OFFER APPLIES TO CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES SHIPMENT ONLY!
