The image is autographed by Martha Graham on the right side: "To Miss Ethel Sager Sincerely Martha Graham." "Soichi Sunami" is embossed in the lower right corner. In the image Graham is wearing long, draping fabric that hangs from her extended arms to the floor. A foot peers out from under the fabric. Although appearing very soft, Graham wears dramatic makeup as her face is turned downwards. Martha Graham (1894-1991) was an American modern dancer and choreographer. In 1926 she founded the Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest dance company in America, which still operates today. Soichi Sunami (1885-1971) was a Japanese-American modernist photographer who had an extended collaboration with Graham. In the later 1920s the pair created iconic modern dance images, such as this.
