Here's the ultimate holiday present for the recording musician or engineer: a vintage Neumann U47 tube microphone. I suspect I needn’t explain what this is, other than to say it’s the holy grail of recording mics. It is in good condition, of course showing evidence of its age. It was serviced in 1998 by Walker Microphones of Canada. He replaced the power supply with a modern one of his construction, and also the connector at the bottom of the mic. As you may know, the threads of these connectors can become worn (or even stripped due to cross-threading). He installed a reliable multipin connector with a bayonet mount. Also, some capacitors and resistors were replaced with modern higher-quality components. I will include the documentation from that work. The mic is equipped with a VF14M tube and K47 capsule. (According to an inscription inside the mic, the original capsule was replaced in 1965. This was quite common, as the early M7 capsules would dry out and lose their tone.) The mic’s original hard box is included. Also included is a Rycote InVision shock mount, which works very well with this mic. I’ve kept it in a suitcase, and will send that to you as well. What does it sound like? Why, a U47 tube mic, of course! Huge low end, gentle top, abundant warmth. The 47 is probably the best microphone for rock singers ever built. Shipping will be via overnight with full insurance, as we both want this to reach you in good condition, and most ground transit systems aren't very gentle with delicate items.
