THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX DATES TO "57" BUT THE EARLIER THAN WWII SERIAL # SEEMS ODD. SO NOT SURE 100% OF THE TIME PERIOD THIS UNIT IS FROM. NO DATES ON IT... I BORROWED THIS DESCRIPTION FROM A WWII UNIT (SERIAL #7460). THIS UNIT BEING OFFERED DOES NOT HAVE ANY NAVY MARKINGS BUT AS I MENTIONED IT WAS GENUINE GOVT SURPLUS. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH ALL PARTS VISIBLE BEING PRESENT Protractor comes in its original dovetailed hardwood box with three extensions and accessories. This instrument was previously used by the US Navy for coastal navigation using a sextant and was invented in 1801 by Joseph Huddart, a U.S. naval captain. This instrument is composed of a circular scale connected to three arms. The center arm is fixed, while the outer two can be adjusted to an angle previously measured with a sextant. Size - The box measurements are: 23" x 8" x 3". Condition - Very good condition as shown with some light staining to the metal and scratches to the wooden case.
