J SEWILL CHRONOMETER in ORIG WOOD BOX 1867 INTERNT EXHIBIT - $2,800 - (Eugene, OR)
Chronometer is in original wood box with beveled glass top. Lid is hinged and has a locking mechanism but key is missing. Box measures 7 3/8" square and stands 7" tall. Lid top is slightly warped and does not close flush to the bottom. See photo #7. There is a handle on each side for carrying. Inside is also a 'key' which I assume to be possibly a balance key. It sits in slot on one corner of box - see Photo #6. Chronometer out of box weighs 5 pounds and looks to be complete. It shows wear and scratches but glass is clear with no chips or scratches. Selling 'as is' since I have no way to check its accuracy. Wood box weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and could use some gluing and re-squaring. J. Sewill could be the founder Joseph or his son John. After 1905 original family was no longer involved in the company and company was sold. It's still in business in Liverpool, England and no longer at 30 Cornhill St. in London. The two red crown warrants are for London Prize Medal Award 1862 and Paris International Exhibition 1867. Postage includes insurance based on $2800. If I've charged too much I refund the difference less $3 for packing materials. This is a rare maritime item and belonged to a retired U.S. Navy officer and came from his estate sale. _gsrx_vers_837 (GS 7.0.15 (837))
