DIMENSIONS: 8 ½" Height x 5 ¼" Width x 1 ¼" thick DESCRIPTION: These late 18th century, London published, leather bound 'Buffon's Natural History of Animals, Vegetables and Minerals,' 243 year-old scientific volumes and the amazing steel engravings of flora, fauna and indigenous peoples contained within them, are in quite well-preserved, overall antique condition. The books are signed by their previous early 19th century owner Jane Sarah Giles, dated 1811 in brown sepia, crow quill ink script signature. Present and found in the estate were the volumes 1, 3, 4 & 6 from the entire 'Buffon's Natural History' leather bound series of volumes. The leather covers are still intact, although expectedly fragile. The leather bound volume's spines are largely completely intact with some fraying, drying and crazing of the ocher and cordovan title banding. The leather spines only suffer from some slight scuffing and expected abrasions and breaks along their edges and where the leather of the spine turns over into the front and back leather covers. Only the interior inset pages show evidence of tanning, most likely caused by the acids in the leather that seeped through the protective onion paper sleeves protecting the title page. Produced in 1775 in London, England, the volumes have profuse steel engraved illustrations of flora & fauna and indigenous peoples.
