This instrument was originally a Conn 6D built in Conn's Elkhart factory. The wrap of a Conn 6D is an excellent wrap with a great design, but the traditional small size of the 6D bell and leadpipe make the horn feel quite small and restricted to play. The original bell tail has been upgraded to a Conn 8DS tail, and the leadpipe has also been upgraded to a Conn 8D leadpipe. This alters the playing characteristics of the horn completely, taking away the characteristic 6D constriction and stuffiness, and instead making the horn open and warm, while still responsive and light. Therefore, this horn is a hybrid 6D/8D (technically a 6DS/8DS since it is a screw-bell model). The bell flare has been kept in yellow brass to bring the warmth and fullness of yellow brass to the horn. This horn is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few very small dings and pings as well as isolated areas of light pitting, etching, and scratching throughout. The inside of the bell flare has the worst of the etching and scratching on the horn. The bell engraving has been almost completely covered by the bell ring. The leadpipe has “8D” stamped on the ferrule. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability.
