Audiophile Vintage Pilot FM AM FA-540 Tube Tuner ReCapped Serviced Excellent USA - $145 - (Jacksonville, NC)
Vintage Audiophile All Vacuum Tube FM AM Pilot Tuner, model FA-540, in excellent condition. It does not have a built-in multiplexer for stereo broadcast reception. It's essentially a monophonic tuner. It has great sound quality with a Y connector (included). It has superb FM and AM reception. Made in Long Island City, NY, USA, in the mid to late 1950's. I found this tube tuner at the Saint Vincent DePaul thrift store in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1990's. It had a few dents on the face plate and some rust on the metal top cover. It was until 2015 that I had it restored, recapped and serviced. I wanted a tube FM tuner to listen to the only classical and Jazz radio station in my current city. I've used it a few times since it was restored. The station changed format this year to all talk and news 24/7. So I have no use for the tuner any more. My professional audio technician, Bruce, with almost 50 years of experience, replaced 10 aged bad capacitors, the old deteriorated power cord, and the old output RCA jack on 08/04/2015. Please see invoice below. He also hammered out the dents on the front panel. So it looks much better now. On the Fall of 2015, I sanded and painted the metal cover. The tuning green magic eye tube is still good, although not nearly as strong as when it was new. We tested all the tubes. They all tested good. Please see list below. The 6U8 and the 6AB4 tubes are a little weak. They should be replaced in the near future. They are readily available on eBay for a few dollars each. 6BA6 130%6BA6 135%6AU6 95%6X4 100%/98%6AL5 106%/108%12AU7 115%/100%6U8 71%/95%6AB4 68% The tuner came without feet. I will include brand new stick-on rubber feet. It will be packed very well for safe arrival. Thank you for your interest.
