1799/8 Bust Dollar, B-2, BB-143, PCGS VG Details Fantastic Color!-From VDB Coins - $875 - (Bristol, VA)

Description 1799/8 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, 13 Stars Obverse, B-2, BB-143, VG Details PCGS Fabulous Toning! It's not every day that some lucky collector has the chance to buy a cool 1799 Draped Bust silver dollar for a song, relatively speaking, but we bought this coin right and will pass the savings along. Not only that, this is a neat 1799/8 overdate, and it is the rarest of the three known overdate die pairings, according to the Bowers-Borckardt silver dollar reference, The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars 1794–1804. The obverse, shared with the BB-141 and BB-142 die combinations, shows the diagnostic 1799/8 with the last 9 very close to the bust, 13 stars closely spaced, and LIBERTY widely spaced. The variety attribution is on the slab. (Curiously, this obverse die was not used to strike 1798-dated silver dollars before it was overdated.) The reverse die was used to strike BB-155 silver dollars (early state) and later, the BB-142 and BB-143 pairings. The reverse also shows 13 stars, with a diagnostic die crack from the border down through the curved part of D. A star touches the lower point of the eagle's beak and just barely enters the mouth. A star point is above the left side of the upright of U in the motto. Die State Information: Bowers-Borckardt Die State II, lowest hair curl partially effaced, flaws below E and RT, crack from bust tip to rim, reverse shows crack from rim to D, wispy crack connecting ATES OF, wing, and top of AME. Although this coin was cleaned at some point in its (long) past, it has since retoned in some spectacular colors that the Trueview shows admirably, and which are beyond our poor powers to add or detract. A great deal of design definition remains on both sides, the primary weakness confined to the right-side reverse. I don't expect this historic coin to stick around long, so don't dally if it has your name on it.At VDB Coins we specialize in beautifully toned coins, of which this lovely toned Indian cent is a pr…
