Portraitof aMajor-General (possibly Count Khreptovich), apparently unsigned, circa 1835, oil on canvas, original brass frame of the period, 6 1/2 x 6 7/8 in. (16,6 x 17,7 cm) The Major-General is decorated with the following millitary awards: Order of St. Anna with diamonds (2nd class), Order of St. George (4th class), Order of St. Vladimir with bow (4th class), silver medal for the 1812 compaign against Napoleon, the Prussian Order "Pour le Merite", Crss of the Polish Order "VIRTUTI MILITARI" (2nd class), and the 30-year blameless service badge. The Polish military order VIRTUTI MILITARI was incorporated into the Russian award system by Nicholas I. After suppression of the 1831 Polish rebellion by the Russian troops, to humiliate the Poles, czar Nicholas I awarded the polish order VIRTUTI MILITARI to the Russian officers who crashed the rebellion. The total of 188 orders of the 2nd class VIRTUTI MILITARI were awarded between 1831 and 1835.
