The MJ Research/Tetrad is a thermocycler that incorporates precise Peltier-effect heat pumps to deliver a temperature range of -5 to 105ºC, with ramping rates of up to 3ºC/sec and temperature homogeneity of ±0.4ºC within 30 seconds of arrival @ 90ºC. The PTC-225 uses four swappable sample block/heat pump assemblies (Alpha units) to accommodate a wide range of tube sizes and applications. The PTC Alpha units feature heated lids that incorporate a thumbwheel to adjust height and pressure, which assures tight sealing of reaction vessels during oil-free thermal cycling. Each Alpha unit is individually programmable and any combination of Alpha units can be run simultaneously. This particular unit is configured with three 96-well Alpha units and one 384-well Alpha unit. The PTC-200 has customizable factory-installed protocols and can also store user-generated programs in separate folders. Programming features include adjustable ramp rates and the ability to step durations and temperatures in successive intervals within a program sequence. This unit also features a port for a chart recorder, a printer interface, and an IEEE-488 interface. This cycler was excess from a university research laboratory. It has a few minor scuffs, but it is in excellent condition overall. I disassembled the unit and inspected everything, and there is no evidence of fluid intrusion or abuse. It passes all start-up diagnostics, and it has been fully tested as follows: the blocks reach the temperature range minimum and maximum, the lids heat quickly and maintain setpoint accurately, all programming functions work correctly, and it ramps quickly and maintains setpoints accurately; The display is clear with no missing segments, and all of the buttons operate smoothly with a firm, positive action.
