15th C Joseon Dynasty Korean Buncheong Ware Sgraffito Stoneware Bottle Flask - $9,375 - (Seattle, WA)

A Buncheong slip-decorated stoneware bottle, Joseon Dynasty, (15th-16th century). Flattened globular form rising from a high splayed foot to the cylindrical neck that ends in a rolled lip, cut in the white slip applied to the body with lotus arabesques with incised-line details and applied with a celadon-tinged glaze, the circular foot rim unglazed. There were 2 notes inside flask that stated vase was purchased in Korea in 1947 during the US occupation and brought back to Seattle. Other notes states 12-15th century. In very good condition with no chips or cracks (inspected with UV light). There is a scratch upper right middle on one side (see 10th photograph). Height is 8 1/4 inches (20.9 cm) width is 6 3/4 inches (17.14cm) and depth is roughly 4 3/4 inches (12.06cm). Sgraffito: This flask is stoneware, covered with white slip and then carved to expose the darker clay body underneath which is a greenish brown. Quite typical of its time, this style is called buncheong ware, and was created in the southern part of Korea. These flasks are highly rare and can reach hundreds of thousands at premier auction houses. This flask is more greenish brown base which is less desirable but still very rare and valuable. Korean arts are on the rise following Chinese and India's demand for their antiques. No provenance except olds notes. Sent photographs for auction inclusion to Christie's auction house in NYC and await response.
