A wide variety of objects are illustrated, ranging back to Byzantine times, but mainly of the 16th-18th centuries. The objects include panels, triptychs, horns carved for various uses, statuettes, caskets, tankards, relief pictures, and more! W. Stanton Howard contributed the essay. One of the great first-generation American collectors, George A. Hearn was an important benefactor and contributor to the collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, but despite these gifts, his own personal collection at the time of his death was immense.
