1940s Valco Resophonic Acoustic Guitar. Dobro. Angelus. Melofonic. No Soundwell. - $295 - (Yellow Springs, OH)
Travel back in time with this vintage acoustic guitar. My understanding is that it was made by Valco, the successor company to both National and Dobro, in Chicago, Illinois, back when Chicago was still Music City USA, home of Harmony, Kay, Valco, Ludwig, Werco, Slingerland, Hammond, Lowrey, Lyon & Healy, Deagan, Geib, Kluson, Shure, Jensen etcetera. Probably made in the mid or late 1940s, but it could be late 1930s. I got it from the second owner, a 79-year old man who received it from his uncle in about 1951. Usually, these faux-bro guitars are branded "Melofonic." It's also similar to the late 1930s Dobro Angelus. It has the resonator cover plate, but no sound well or cone underneath. It's just a flat-top acoustic guitar with a cover plate. So, it does sound different than a regular flat-top, but not like a full resonator guitar. It has much ordinary play wear all over, with various scrapes and scratches. Despite the significant cosmetic wear, it's is in pretty good condition structurally. A couple of the resonator plate screws and one of the tailpiece screws are replacements. The paint on the fretboard is quite worn. All six black tuner buttons are replacements. The tuners strips are original open-back patent pending Klusons. 12th fret action is a so-so 4/32". Nut is 1-13/16". Reasonably new strings on it. The original case is very worn. All three leather case hinges had torn off so I've reattached the lid with denim strips, which are quite fragile. But the case does protect the guitar. I reassembled the case accessory pocket, also using blue denim as a hinge. And it comes with some very old music books in poor condition. The guitar sounds cool. It's not quite the full resonator sound, but like a half-resonator sound. If you do make an offer during business hours, please know that I typically respond to offers within the hour. Questions? It will be well packed with plenty of new 1/2" bubble wrap and shipped in a new 46"x19"x7" stout cardboard instrument box. P
