French Antique Drafting Set in Walnut Case w Brass Inlay - $225 - (Manti, UT)
This is an Antique French Drafting Set in a Walnut Case that has Brass Stringing and a Brass Name Plate on the lid. Inside there is a removable wood tray with a set of drafting instruments. The instruments are made of brass, steel, possibly bone, and are as we found it with the exception of some very light cleaning. (Not all of the instruments appear to be from the original matching set and we assume they were added or mixed by the previous owner which is usually the case with these old. well used sets.) The tray is lined with a velvet like fabric. The lid has a padded silk lining and opens up to a paper lined compartment that would have served to store flat items like a protractor. There is a compartment under the tray that also would have been used for storage of additional instruments or marerials used by the draftsman. There is a working key, possibly original, and it works smoothly to lock the case. The case measures 9 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, and almost 2 inches high. It weighs 1 pound, 6 ounces. We have found a few of these sets over the years and love them all. Our antiques expert places them being made, and used, in the mid to late 1900's but we have no information on the maker or previous owner. This one is extra nice with the walnut and brass case in near perfect condition with the exception of a drying crack on the lid. It shows clearly in the red paper lining on the lid but on the outside there is only an indentation that shows when the light is just right. The paper lining on the inside of the lid flap has partially separated from the lid lining and that is also visible in the photos. We like to imagine some aspiring draftsman, engineer, or architect acquiring this set at some point in their training or occurpation and thinking, "I am so lucky to have such a modern and beautiful set of tools, certainly the epitome of technology in my trade!" We offer it not to be used today, no modern engineer would ever use these outdated tools, but what a rem
