French Antique Drafting Set in Mahogany Case w Brass Stringing/Nameplate - $195 - (Manti, UT)
This is an Antique French Drafting Set in a Mahogany (We think) wood case that has brass stringing inlay and a brass name plate on the top. Inside is a nearly complete drafting set that is typical of ones made between 1850 and 1890 as is the wood case. The instruments are in a removable wood tray that is lined with a purple velvet like fabric. Underneath the tray is a compartment that could be used to store additional drafting instruments, leads, small papers, etc. The lid has a padded silk lining that opens to a compartment intened for storing flat drafting items or small papers. There is a working lock with a key that is possibly original and the latch works smoothly as do the hinges. Hinges are brass and work smoothly also. The writing ink pens have handles that may be bone and the other instruments are made of brass and steel. The drafting instruments are as we found them. We cleaned them lightly and it appears that the set is mostly original but with some parts that were probably added by the previous owner, which is typical of sets that were used extensively. It measures 9 inches long, 5 inches wide, 1.75 inches high, and weighs 1 pound 6 ounces. We love these old sets and this is a nice one in great condition. The lid has some tiny age cracking in the veneer that is visible when the light is just right. There are a couple places on the paper lid liner that show slight damage but actually are in quite good condition considering their age of over 100 years. It is unusual to find a set as this one where there is not some warping or large cracks or dents in the wood. We know nothing of the maker or owner but there is an old paper glued on the bottom that appears to say Louve, Paris. Possibly a clue to its seller or maker... A set such as this may have been used by a student or a practitioner of one of the drafting trades, possibly in architecture or engineering many, many years ago.. At one time this set was considered the state of the art. Not so today with c
