Gustav Mahler Memoirs First Edition Extremely Rare - $175 - (Sarasota, FL)
Extremely Rare First Edition 1923 Erinnerungen an Gustav Mahler (Memories/Recollections of Gustav Mahler) by Natalie Bauer Lechner. Published by E.P. Tal & Co., Leipzig, Germany. This book is in the German language. It has a frontispiece (no tissue protection) and it looks like the Table of Contents is at the back of the book. Hardcover, 187 pages. This is a fine, unique reminiscence of a musical genius. Natalie Bauer Lechner was a lifelong friend of Gustav Mahler. An Austrian violinist, a member of Mahler's social circle, and Mahler's sometime lover, Bauer Lechner met Mahler when they were both students; she kept a journal/diary during their long friendship and this book is a compilation of that journal/diary and was published two years after her death. This is the first edition German edition; the first English translation wasn't published until 1980. Bookplate of Fritz Schreiber; to the best of my research it seems to be from the library of Fritz Schreiber the American-born composer, organist, and choirmaster of Austrian descent. Hardcover has wear to it. Front end papers have light stains, inside back cover has remnants of pencil writing at the top near the spine, and there is separation where netting is seen. Pages have tanning, creasing, and light staining. There is separation between pages at the spine/binding but pages appear secure to the binding. The paper used has a thin feel to it and there is a waviness to the pages. Please note that I have described the book as best as I can. See photos for condition and details as they are part of the description. If you have a question about the book, please ask.
