The Didgeridoo, said by many to be the World’s oldest wind instrument, originated in North East Arnhem Land (Australia) where it was/is called Yidaki and played primarily for ceremonial purposes. It was also employed as a long distance communication device where the “signature style” of the sender would identify him. In the words of Djalu Gurruwiwi, well-respected didge master and maker: “so let me remind you that the Yidaki is sacred to us. It can’t be used in ways that upset the Custodians because of the Spirit within the Yidaki, the Spirit of our ancestral Beings. It can never be misused. If disrespected, the Spirit leaves the Yidaki rendering it powerless”. Despite being the most simple and primitive of all aerophones, when married to good technique and imagination, its complex acoustics and possibilities will emerge leading to a new unsuspected appreciation. The Yidaki pictured here is an outstanding and truly unique item. Made in the Western U.S. in the late 90’s out of rawhide and partially covered (~ 60%) with python skin. Dimensions: It’s about 64 3/4” long and weighs 5.3 lb. The walls are approximately 1/4” thick. (In the mouthpiece area: ~3/8” thick). External dimensions: Bell diameter - ~3 1/2”. Mouthpiece- which is an integral part of the instrument, is oval and measures ~ 2” x 1 3/4”. The whole Instrument (in and out) is waterproofed. It plays in the key of C# (69 Hz.) First overtone: E (163 Hz.) Responsive, good bright sound projection and vocalization and robust back pressure for long sustained circular breathing.
