Historical 18th C Jean Pierre Blanchard Hot Air Balloon Bilston Enamel Tiebacks This historical pair of tiebacks are decorated with a scene of a hot air balloon lift off with a water view and spectators. The enamel sets on a copper body. The enamel scene reads “Blanchard“ for Jean Pierre Blanchard, a French inventor. Jean Pierre had successfully built a balloon himself, made the first flight over the English Channel, and made the first balloon ascent in North America. These tiebacks date from the 18th Century and were made to commemorate Jean Pierre. Each tieback (largest part) measures approximately 2 + 1/8 inches long, 1 + 5/8 inches wide, and 2 + ¾ inches front to back. They are in excellent condition with the exception of wear on the gilt frame of the one on the right and the inner section of the framing has some of the brass peeled away around the oval as can be seen in the photo , the enamel plaques are fine with the exeption of a hairline on the enamel of one of the tiebacks .
